In the Kenyan town of Nanyuki, protests against the construction of a quarantine center for people who may be infected with the Ebola virus escalated into clashes with police. According to witnesses, one of the protesters sustained a head wound from a gunshot, while another person was injured by the use of tear gas. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd after demonstrators began throwing stones and setting fires.

The protests were triggered by U.S. plans to build a quarantine center near the Laikipia Air Base, approximately 150 kilometers from Nairobi, for American citizens arriving from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where an Ebola outbreak is ongoing.

Protesters opposed the placement of such a facility in the country. They state that they do not want to risk the spread of the dangerous disease. Meanwhile, no confirmed cases of Ebola have been recorded in Kenya so far.
