The majority of European Union citizens continue to support Ukraine in the war against Russia and consider the Russian invasion a direct threat to EU security. A significant portion of Europeans also supports sanctions against Moscow, financial aid to Kyiv, and the supply of weapons to Ukraine. This is evidenced by the results of a new Eurobarometer survey published by the European Commission, reports UNN.
Details
According to the study, 76% of respondents believe that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a threat to the security of the European Union. Support for the EU's response to Russian aggression remains steadily high at 55%, which is 2 percentage points higher than in the previous survey.
The vast majority of EU citizens support key decisions regarding aid to Ukraine:
- 80% approve of receiving Ukrainians fleeing the
war;
- 75% support financial and humanitarian aid to
Ukraine;
- 70% are in favor of maintaining sanctions against Russia.
Furthermore, 76% of those surveyed agree that the European Union should continue to support Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved.
Also, 57% of Europeans support granting Ukraine EU candidate status, and 56% approve of the European Union financing the purchase and supply of military equipment for Ukraine.
The European Commission noted that against the backdrop of global instability, Europeans increasingly perceive the EU as a source of security and stability. In particular, 73% of citizens called the European Union a stabilizing force in the world.
At the same time, support for a common EU defense and security policy has reached one of its highest levels in the last two decades - it is supported by 81% of respondents.
The survey also showed a sharp deterioration in Europeans' attitudes toward Russia. 83% of EU citizens hold a negative opinion of the Russian Federation, while only 14% view Russia positively.
The study was conducted from March 12 to April 5, 2026, in all 27 EU countries. In total, more than 26,000 citizens were interviewed.
