In north-central Nigeria, gunmen attacked a children's facility and kidnapped 23 students. This was reported by the Associated Press, according to UNN.
Details
The attack took place in an isolated area of the city of Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State. According to local authorities, the institution involved is the Dahallukitab Group of Schools, which was operating without official registration.
According to officials, 15 of the kidnapped children have already been released. The search for the remaining eight continues.
"Intensive operations are underway to ensure the safe return of the remaining eight victims and the apprehension of the perpetrators,"
Information regarding the age of the children was not specified; however, in Nigeria, the term "students" typically refers to children under the age of 12.
Rise in Kidnappings
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. At the same time, the region is seeing an increase in kidnappings for ransom.
Analysts note that schools are increasingly becoming targets for armed gangs, as this attracts attention and increases the chances of receiving a ransom.
Nigeria has been facing a security crisis for over a decade, particularly in the north of the country, where groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other ISIS-affiliated structures operate.
