According to preliminary information, the IAEA received a notification from Ukraine early this morning regarding a drone attack on the central spent nuclear fuel storage facility located in the Chornobyl exclusion zone.
The strike caused significant damage to the fuel reception building at the facility, specifically to the facade, windows, and doors, while neighboring buildings were also affected by the blast wave. Radiation levels at the facility remain within established norms, Ukraine reports
Furthermore, the agency reported that an IAEA team will soon visit the site at the Chornobyl plant to inspect the consequences.
Director General Rafael Grossi says the incident is deeply concerning as it occurred at a facility containing a large amount of nuclear material stored just a few meters away from the attacked building
In addition, according to the agency's Director General Rafael Grossi, "attacks on nuclear facilities are absolutely unacceptable and directly contradict key nuclear safety principles, in particular the 7 indispensable pillars of nuclear safety and security during an armed conflict."
