The Cabinet of Ministers approved the Biomethane Production Development Program for the period up to 2035, which provides for a large-scale expansion of the renewable gas industry, attracting investments, and strengthening the country's energy independence. This was stated by First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, writes UNN.
It (the program - ed.) activates our capabilities to become a major producer of biogases and an exporter of them to the European Union, which will help Europe get rid of dependence on Russian hydrocarbons.
According to the minister, the implementation of the program will strengthen Ukraine's energy resilience and provide a significant impetus to the development of renewable energy through attracting investments in the industry.
The program provides for the construction of new biomethane plants, modernization of existing biogas plants, creation of investment incentives for businesses, and deregulation regarding the connection of biomethane producers to gas transmission and gas distribution networks.
Our ambitious goal is to reach biomethane production volumes of 1 billion cubic meters per year by 2030 and increase it to 2.1 billion cubic meters in the next five years.
At the first stage of the program's implementation, it is planned to launch eight biomethane plants and create an institutional framework for the full functioning of the biomethane sector.
The government also approved an action plan for the implementation of the Program, where the Ministry of Energy is one of the main executors.
This year, we plan to gain access to the EU database on renewable fuels, initiate the conclusion of an agreement with the European Union on mutual recognition of guarantees of origin for biomethane, and approve rules for determining the quality of natural gas.
