Due to disputes in the German government, Ukraine lost military aid worth 3.87 billion euros. The German government blames the crisis on Chancellor Olaf Scholz for allegedly “banning” of the Ministry of Defense to send prepared financial requests for support to Ukraine to the Ministry of Finance. This was reported by BILD, as reported by UNN.
As previously reported by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the German Finance Ministry has informed its Defense Ministry colleagues that Germany can no longer finance new support for Ukraine.
In response to BILD's request, the country's Ministry of Finance stated that it was “ready to consider the provision of additional funds in a short time” if they were “specifically and transparently communicated”. However, according to them, “the Ministry of Finance has not yet received any specific report on material needs, so neither consideration nor decision can be made.
BILD's government sources blame the crisis on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. According to them, his office “forbade” the country's Defense Ministry to send prepared financial requirements to the Ministry of Finance.
The Ministry of Defense blames the problem on their financial colleagues. According to the military, they “cannot implement more than 30 measures that were a high priority for Ukraine, totaling more than 3 billion euros.
According to BILD, back in mid-May, the Ministry of Defense requested “excessive spending” for Ukraine this year of 3.87 billion euros. This includes 1.3 billion for spare parts, 600 million for artillery ammunition, and 0.5 billion each for drones and armored vehicles.
According to BILD, much of the material needed for the supplies requested in May has already been sold and is not available for Ukraine this year.
