Garden care: what every garden plot owner needs to know

 • 3380 переглядiв

Garden care involves regular watering, fertilizing, and pruning of plants. Seasonal work and protection against pests guarantee the health of the garden and a good harvest.

Garden plants require systematic care throughout the year. Their condition depends on growing conditions, soil quality, irrigation regimes, and the timeliness of agrotechnical measures. Regular monitoring allows for the timely identification of problems and prevents their spread.

UNN has learned how to properly care for plants in your garden so that they continue to please the eye in summer and provide a generous harvest in autumn.

Irrigation and Moisture Control

The irrigation regime is determined by taking into account the type of plants, air temperature, and the amount of precipitation. In open ground, moisture evaporates faster, so during periods of high temperatures, watering is carried out more frequently. Water should penetrate to the depth of the root system rather than remaining on the surface.

Watering in the morning reduces the risk of plant overheating and allows moisture to be better absorbed. Evening watering is possible provided there is a stable temperature without sharp drops. It is important to ensure that drops do not fall on the leaves of certain crops, as this increases the risk of fungal diseases.

To control moisture, a simple method of checking the soil at a depth of several centimeters is used. If the soil is dry, the plant needs watering. Excessive moisture creates conditions for the development of rot.

Plant Fertilization in the Garden

Plant nutrition is based on a balance of macro- and microelements. The main elements are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Additionally, plants require calcium, magnesium, and microelements in small quantities.

Organic fertilizers, in turn, improve soil structure and promote the development of beneficial microflora. These include compost, humus, and plant-based infusions. Mineral fertilizers provide a rapid supply of nutrients.

Fertilization is carried out in several stages. In spring, nitrogen fertilizers are applied to stimulate the growth of green mass. During the formation of buds and fruits, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are used. In autumn, the amount of fertilization is reduced so that the plants can prepare for the dormant period.

Compliance with application rates is mandatory. An excess of fertilizer negatively affects the root system and the overall condition of the plants.

Pruning and Sanitary Care of Trees and Shrubs in the Garden

Sanitary pruning is carried out throughout the season. Dry, broken, and affected branches are removed.

Formative pruning is used for trees and shrubs. It allows for the control of growth direction and ensures light access to the inner parts of the plant. For decorative plants, it is important to maintain the specified shape.

Pruning tools must be disinfected. This reduces the risk of transmitting infections. Cuts on large branches are treated with special agents.

Protecting the Garden from Pests and Diseases

Regular inspection of plants allows for the detection of signs of damage at an early stage: changes in leaf color, spots, deformations, and the presence of insects.

Biological protection methods involve the use of natural remedies and safe preparations. Chemical preparations are used in cases of significant infestation. Treatment is carried out taking into account weather conditions and the stage of plant development.

Prevention includes maintaining distance between plants, proper watering, and the removal of plant debris. Keeping the area clean reduces the risk of pest spread.

Soil Care in the Garden

Soil condition affects plant access to water and nutrients. Regular loosening improves aeration and promotes the development of the root system. This procedure is performed carefully to avoid damaging the roots.

Weeds are removed systematically. They compete with cultivated plants for resources. Particular attention is paid to rhizomatous weeds, which spread quickly.

To maintain fertility, crop rotation and the planting of green manure (siderates) are used, which help restore soil structure.

Mulching

Mulching helps retain moisture and stabilize soil temperature. It also reduces the intensity of weed growth. Organic materials or special coverings are used for this purpose.

The mulch layer is distributed evenly. It is important not to cover the base of the stem to avoid rotting. Mulch is periodically renewed.

Seasonal Garden Work

In spring, garden areas are cleaned, soil is prepared, and the first fertilizations are made. Most crops are planted during this period. In summer, the main focus is on watering, fertilizing, and protecting plants.

In autumn, pruning, removal of plant debris, and preparation for the winter period are performed. Some plants require covering. In winter, the condition of the covers is monitored, and plants are protected from mechanical damage.

Reminder

May is the time when almost all vegetables and fruits can be planted on your plot: the air temperature has already stabilized and the soil has warmed up sufficiently. This is the month when apple trees, pear trees, and grapes can be planted. Strawberry and wild strawberry seedlings can also be planted during this period, as can berry shrub seedlings with a closed root system: raspberries, currants, and gooseberries.
