Chrystia Freeland resigned as Canada's deputy prime minister and finance minister due to a dispute with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The basis for the disagreement was a possible "tariff war" with the United States after Donald Trump came to the White House. She published a letter of resignation addressed to Justin Trudeau in X, UNN reports.

In it, she said that last Friday Trudeau informed her that he no longer wanted to see her as finance minister and offered her another position.
On Friday, you said that you no longer wanted to see me as Minister of Finance. You offered me another position in the cabinet. On reflection, I have decided that the only honest and right thing for me to do is to resign from the government. To be effective, a minister must speak on behalf of the prime minister and with his full confidence. With your decision, you have made it clear that I no longer have that trust,
The minister noted that she and Trudeau had been having arguments over the past few weeks about the best path for Canada.
In the letter, she stated that Canada is facing a serious challenge due to US President-elect Donald Trump's threat to impose a punitive 25% tariff on all Canadian goods.
We have to take this threat very seriously. This means that we must maintain financial stability today so that we have the reserves we may need in the event of a future tariff war. This means not engaging in expensive political gimmicks that we can hardly afford and that make Canadians doubt that we realize the seriousness of the situation,
She said she intends to run for parliament again in the next federal elections.
