At least five missiles were fired from the Iraqi city of Zummar toward a US military base in northeastern Syria on Sunday, two Iraqi security sources told Reuters, UNN reports .
Details
The attack on US troops was the first since early February, when Iranian-backed groups in Iraq stopped their attacks on US troops.
The attack occurred on the same day that Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani returned from a visit to the United States and met with President Joe Biden at the White House.
Two security sources and a senior army officer reported that the rocket launcher, mounted on the back of a small truck, was parked in the Syrian border town of Zummar.
According to the military, the truck caught fire due to the explosion of unlaunched missiles while military aircraft were in the sky.
We cannot confirm that the truck was bombed by US warplanes until we investigate
The attacks occurred a day after a massive explosion at a military base in Iraq early Saturday morning killed one member of the Iraqi security forces, which include groups backed by Iran.
