The head of the National Security and Defense Council's Center for Countering Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko, explained the importance for Ukraine of building new relations with Syria, pointing out that everyone will benefit from the weakening of Russia in the Middle East and Africa, UNN reports.
Syria is very important now, as for a long time Russia has been using Assad to impose its influence in the Middle East and Africa, in particular by blocking the Qatari gas project. On Monday, December 30, during a visit to Syria, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga held talks in Damascus with the leadership of the Syrian administration - its leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, Prime Minister Mohamed al-Bashir, and Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Sheibani.
The Minister emphasized that this is the first visit of an official delegation of Ukraine to Syria in many years, which symbolizes the readiness to open a new page in bilateral relations between the countries.
Sibiga expressed hope that the new Syria will become a country that respects international law, including the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. According to Sibiga, "this will pave the way for the restoration of diplomatic relations, political dialogue and the work of diplomatic missions.
