EU seeks to ensure gas transit from Russia through Ukraine after 2024 - media

A number of European countries are working to continue gas supplies from Russia through Ukraine to the EU countries  after the expiration of the contract between Kyiv and Moscow at the end of 2024. This was reported on Wednesday, July 3, by the German economic newspaper Handelsblatt, according to UNN with reference to DW

Details 

It is noted that, in particular, the German Ministry of Economy and the European Commission (EC)  reported that the German government and Brussels are negotiating with EU member states that receive transit gas. 

According to Handelsblatt, citing a representative of the European Commission, the EU  is considering signing a contract with Gazprom for gas transit through Ukraine. 

Despite the war with Ukraine, Russia continues to supply gas through its territory to EU countries such as Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

On July 3, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine does not want to extend the gas contract with Russia. Kyiv is currently  negotiating natural gas supplies to the European Union from Azerbaijan. 

 Earlier, Bloomberg reported that European officials are negotiating to keep gas flowing through the pipeline through Ukraine, one option could be for European companies to buy and pump gas from Azerbaijan into Russian pipelines.
