The European Union's Special Envoy for Ukrainians, Ylva Johansson, expects the EU to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians for another year—until 2028. She stated this in an interview with DW, reports UNN.
"Given the current situation, I think that a proposal will come (from the European Commission - ed.) to extend it for another year—until March 2028. And I think that the EU member states will agree to this,"
According to her, discussions are currently underway between EU member states regarding a common approach to the future of temporary protection for Ukrainians.
"In my view, it looks like we will arrive at an extension of temporary protection, perhaps with some minor adjustments, but basically—for one more year,"
She also noted that she expects a corresponding proposal from the European Commission "fairly soon," as member states are "ready to do this."
Johansson expressed the opinion that the EU understands that many Ukrainians are concerned about what will happen after March 2027. This approach is due to the fact that the war continues, and no peace agreement or even a sustainable ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia is expected in the near future.
"We do not see a peace agreement in the near future. And therefore, people, of course, need to understand what will happen next," the special envoy noted.
At the same time, Johansson emphasized that Ukrainians who have already lived in EU countries for several years should gradually transition from the temporary protection regime to other legal grounds for residence.
"I do not think it is a good idea to remain under temporary protection for five or six years. One should transition to another, more appropriate legal basis," she stated.

The EU temporary protection mechanism was activated in March 2022 following the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It gives Ukrainians the right to live, work, and study in EU countries. Currently, more than four million Ukrainians in the EU benefit from this status.
