Estonia has adopted a law that amends the Constitution and abolishes the right to vote in local elections for citizens of Russia, Belarus, as well as stateless persons residing in the country. This is stated in a statement by the President of the Republic of Estonia, Alar Karis, writes UNN.

Details

The decision, according to which only citizens of Estonia and the European Union can vote in local elections, is undoubtedly legitimate

- the President noted.

Karis also drew attention to the fact that it is important that those who lose the right to vote do not feel excluded from public life or a threat to the security of Estonia. At the same time, he assured that the path to obtaining Estonian citizenship will remain open to persons loyal to the state.

Recall

On March 26, the Estonian Parliament voted for amendments to the Constitution, which will deprive citizens of Russia and Belarus of the right to vote in local elections. However, in the elections in the fall of 2025, stateless persons, that is, owners of "grey passports", will still be able to vote, and in the future they will also be deprived of the right to vote.
