Painful cramps, nausea, and vomiting were among the symptoms experienced by attendees of the food festival, which was held in honor of the best restaurants in Southern California.
Mark Kapczynski was one of 80 people who fell ill after the outbreak of the norovirus. He said it was his most unpleasant experience and he is still recovering.
Of course, I never thought that this was the 101st event of the year - these restaurants are too good, it can't be
Kapchinsky said that he and his wife attended the Los Angeles Times 101 Best Restaurants event, a food-tasting festival that honors what the newspaper's editors consider to be the 101 best restaurants in Southern California.
We went to Providence, which is a world-class restaurant serving fresh oysters and clams with different sauces, and I ate two servings very quickly
And according to him, after that he immediately felt bloated, and the next day his symptoms worsened.
Kapczynski is not the only one who felt sick after eating oysters. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is currently investigating a norovirus outbreak.
So far, 80 cases have been identified. Emergency room doctor Dr. Ali Jamehdor said the disease is not a typical stomach illness.
It seems that the oysters have hit the patients very hard, because they are coming to the emergency room very sick. Vomiting, diarrhea, severe abdominal cramps, and all of this is due to a microbe called vibrio. It is a very specific bacterium that is found in oysters and causes a disease that is very sickening to humans
Providence, one of the most famous restaurants in Los Angeles, said the oysters came from farms near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Health inspectors at the event signed off on all the handling and serving rules.
“The nature of the norovirus is such that it would not have been detectable by the seller, the restaurant, or the health inspectors who were on site, given that norovirus does not affect the appearance, smell, or taste of shellfish,” the restaurant said in a statement.
10 days after the event, the California Department of Public Health issued a warning about Canadian oysters. The warning stated that the shellfish could make people sick.
