Stephen Fry was knighted in the annual New Year's list of honorary guests of the United Kingdom, and Carey Mulligan and Sarah Lancashire became commanders of the British Empire, writes UNN citing Variety.

Details

Each year the reigning monarch - in this case King Charles III - names new members of the British knighthoods, which include knights, dames, commanders of the British Empire, officers of the Order of the British Empire, members of the Order of the British Empire, holders of the British Empire Medal, and honorary companions.

Actor, TV presenter and comedian Stephen Fry was awarded a knighthood along with former England national football team manager Gareth Southgate, London Mayor Sadiq Khan and former West Midlands Mayor Andy Street. Labour MP Emily Thornberry was named a dame, as was stage star and actress Carmen Marron.

It is reported that Fry, who was knighted for his charitable work in mental health and the environment, was "thrilled and delighted" with the award.

"I think the most emotional I feel is when I think about my childhood, about my terrible unhappiness, suffering and foolishness, and about everything that led to so many failures in childhood," Fry said. "And for my parents it was a real disaster. I mean, every time the phone rang, they thought: 'Oh God, what has Stephen done this time?' It was a kind of family joke.'

"Promising Young Woman" and "Maestro" star Carey Mulligan and "Happy Valley" actress Sarah Lancashire were awarded the Order of the British Empire for their contributions to the dramatic arts.

Among other well-known entertainment figures who received awards are "The Sixth Commandment" star Ann Reid, "Shameless" and "Bad Sisters" actress Anne-Marie Duff, "Back to Black" Eddie Marsan, "Inspector Morse" Kevin Whately and "Doctor Who" lead actor Tom Baker.
