In Bulgaria, a Ukrainian bus rolled backward and crashed into a crowd of passengers on the roadside. Two people died, and 16 more were injured to varying degrees.

A serious road accident occurred near the border in Bulgaria. The accident resulted in the death of two people and at least 16 injured after a Ukrainian bus rolled backward and hit passengers standing behind it, UNN reports with reference to Novinite.

Details

The accident occurred on the Burgas-Malko Tarnovo road, near the checkpoint leading to Turkey. According to preliminary information, the bus, carrying 37 passengers and two drivers, all Ukrainian citizens, stopped after running out of fuel. As soon as the passengers got out and gathered behind the vehicle, it unexpectedly started moving backward, the publication writes.

Authorities reported that the bus then crashed into a group of people and ended up in a roadside ditch. As investigators explained, "the vehicle broke down after running out of fuel. Passengers were disembarked, but a little later the bus suddenly moved and crashed into people standing behind it."

The impact was fatal for two passengers, and 16 others were injured, some of them seriously.

Ambulance crews took six injured people to hospitals in Burgas, and another ten were taken to an emergency center in Malko Tarnovo. The remaining passengers were temporarily accommodated in a day center in the border town, where they received medical care and basic necessities, the publication writes.

Local officials reported that the bus was traveling to Turkey as part of a trip involving Ukrainian citizens, including several refugees living in Burgas. The group was reportedly waiting near the vehicle when the incident occurred.

The vehicle overturned after the collision, but all passengers and both drivers were eventually evacuated. Some of the injured, including children, received medical attention on the spot before being taken for further treatment.

The bus driver was detained by local police, and an investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
