Sheikha Hasina left her residence in Dhaka after it was stormed by protesters. The resignation comes amid massive unrest that has killed about 300 people over the past month.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled her residence in the capital Dhaka. Before that, some protesters stormed Hasina's official residence. UNN reports this with reference to the BBC, AFP and the Indian broadcasting corporation NDTV.

According to AFP, citing a source in Hasina's entourage, protesters broke into the palace where the residence is located.

Hasina, who has led Bangladesh since 2009, is currently aboard a helicopter heading to the Indian city of Agartala, BBC Bengali reports.

NDTV writes that her sister Sheikh Rehana disappeared with the prime minister. According to the source, Hasina wanted to record an address to the people, but she was unable to do so. Bangladesh Army Commander Waqer-Uz-Zaman reportedly said that an interim government would be formed.

Addendum

Hasina's resignation came as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of the capital, Dhaka, the day after clashes between police and demonstrators left at least 90 people dead.

The student protests began in July with a demand for reform of civil service recruitment rules. The protests have since escalated into a broader anti-government movement and nationwide unrest, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Over the past month, about 300 people have been killed in the mass protests.
