The Airbus A320 took off at 7.17 am local time from Leon airport in central Mexico, heading to Tijuana in the north-west of the country.
Shortly after takeoff, "an unknown assailant attacked a flight attendant and tried to enter the cockpit to hijack a plane to the United States," the US Department of security said in a statement.
