In recent years, Ozempic has become one of the most talked-about weight loss aids in the world. It is actively promoted on social media, and the drug's popularity continues to grow following reports of its use by Hollywood stars. Nutritionist Oleksandr Kushch spoke with a journalist from UNN about who Ozempic is actually prescribed for and how safe it is for health.
According to the nutritionist, the main active ingredient in Ozempic is semaglutide. It is this substance that affects stomach receptors and helps suppress appetite. Initially, the drug was created for people with type 2 diabetes; however, its impact on weight loss was noticed later.
Ozempic is a medication. The component of Ozempic is semaglutide, which affects the receptor system. It acts on receptors in the stomach, thereby inducing a feeling of fullness and suppressing appetite. Initially, this drug was used—and is still used—in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Only later did it turn out that people could significantly reduce their caloric intake and lose weight
The doctor notes that a real hype has emerged around the drug, actively supported by advertising and popularity among celebrities. According to him, because of this, the price of the drug has risen significantly, and Ozempic itself began to be perceived as a "quick fix" for weight loss. At the same time, the doctor emphasizes that the drug cannot be considered safe for uncontrolled use.
Ozempic has been dubbed a miracle drug used by Hollywood stars. Against this backdrop, its price has increased greatly. This hype was fueled by the fact that Ozempic was sold via the internet or through doctors. But this is a hormonal drug, so it is available by prescription only
The nutritionist emphasizes that Ozempic can indeed help people with obesity or serious overeating problems. However, for people with minor excess weight, the drug, in his opinion, is not necessary. He also warns that weight loss without lifestyle changes will not yield long-term results.
If a person has an extra 2-5 kilograms, this can be removed through balanced nutrition and sports. Ozempic is not needed for this. It helps people more who have problems with overeating and addiction to large portions. But using it as a drug for the lazy is wrong
Separately, the doctor drew attention to the drug's side effects. According to him, patients using Ozempic often complain of gastrointestinal problems, headaches, and nutrient deficiencies due to a sharp reduction in food intake. He also emphasizes that uncontrolled weight loss can lead to loss of muscle mass.
People complain of nausea, constipation, gastrointestinal disorders, and headaches. Due to malnutrition, a deficiency of protein and muscle mass appears. There is even the concept of 'Ozempic face,' where muscles literally sag due to rapid weight loss. Therefore, this drug cannot be used constantly and without a doctor's supervision
At the same time, the nutritionist admits that the drug has positive sides. According to the specialist, some patients notice a decrease in cravings for alcohol, smoking, sweets, and fast food after taking Ozempic. That is why its possible impact is currently being actively researched—not only on weight but also on changing eating habits.
People really stop being drawn to alcohol, smoking, sweets, and fast food. Now specialists have picked up the idea that this can affect not only weight but also lifestyle improvement. But the drug must be used only under medical supervision, taking into account all side effects and contraindications
Oleksandr Kushch also added that alternative products with a similar effect are now appearing, but without the use of hormones. At the same time, he stressed that no drug can replace healthy eating, physical activity, and lifestyle changes.
