Powerful floods and tornadoes that have raged in a number of US states since the middle of last week have claimed the lives of 20 people. In Kentucky, a 9-year-old boy was swept away by floodwaters while walking to a bus stop. The child did not survive. Several people died in southwestern Tennessee after a strong EF-3 tornado swept through the town of Selmer.
In Georgia, two people were crushed by a large tree on a golf course.
The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management has confirmed the state's first storm-related death. A five-year-old child was found dead in a house in southwest Little Rock.
In Missouri, a 16-year-old firefighter involved in a water rescue mission died Friday in an accident in Beaufort, about 60 miles west of St. Louis.
The day before, in Missouri, the chief of the Whitewater Fire Department died during a rescue operation. He was helping to free a driver who was trapped in his car.
In total, ten deaths were reported in Tennessee and three in Missouri. Two lives were taken by the weather in Kentucky and one each in Indiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana.
The weather cyclone that caused the deadly storms in a number of states has been hanging almost motionless over the center of the country for four days. Now it is moving east through the southern regions, causing heavy rains and thunderstorms from the northern Gulf Coast to the southern Appalachians.
A high risk of tornadoes has been warned in Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Destructive gusts of wind are predicted, as well as short-term isolated vortices.
