An Austrian court has refused to extradite Ukrainian businessman Dmytro Firtash to the United States, where he is accused of corruption schemes related to bribes for titanium mining in India. This was reported by Vienna Online, according to UNN.

Details

According to the newspaper, the Vienna Regional Court made its decision on November 7, but announced it only on the evening of December 4. The decision was the result of a long-running extradition trial against Firtash to the United States, where he is accused of conspiring to pay bribes in India to obtain rights to mine titanium used in jet engines.

The publication notes that the prosecutor's office plans to file an appeal by December 16.

Addendum

Firtash is accused in the United States of conspiring to pay bribes in India for the rights to mine titanium used in jet engines. Firtash denies all charges and insists on his innocence.

Dmitry Firtash was detained in Austria in March 2014 at the request of US investigators, but was released on bail of €125 million, after which he appealed his extradition to the US. The oligarch faces up to 50 years in prison and confiscation of all his assets.

Recall

The UK government has imposed sanctions on Dmitry Firtash, his wife and financier Denys Horbunenko. The sanctions include a travel ban and asset freeze.

In June of this year, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy extended sanctions against 390 oligarchs with ties to Russia.  In particular, the sanctions list includes Dmitry Firtash and Oleg Deripaska.
