US policy on the Russian-Ukrainian war: US citizens are divided in their assessment of Washington's actions

The Pew Research Center has conducted a poll on Americans' attitudes towards US policy on Ukraine. It revealed differences between Republicans and Democrats on the issues of supporting Ukraine and assessing the threat from the war.

The share of Americans who believe that russia's invasion of Ukraine poses a threat to U.S. interests has declined since 2022, while the majority of Americans approve of maintaining sanctions against russia; more than 50% approve of continuing to send military equipment to Ukraine.

Americans are divided on whether the USA is responsible for helping Ukraine. According to the poll, 48% of respondents believe that the White House bears responsibility; slightly more - 49% - do not see responsibility in the issue of supporting Ukraine in the fight against russia.

Also, the researchers again revealed partisan differences over the US actions in the context of organizing assistance to Ukraine, as well as the amount of this support. 62% of Republicans say that the United States is not obliged to help Ukraine.

Among other data regarding aid to Ukraine:

  • 29% of Americans say the U.S. provides too much support for Ukraine;
  •  26% say the volume is correct;
  • Two in ten (19%) indicate that the U.S. does not provide enough support.

The share of Republicans who say the U.S. is giving too much aid to Ukraine is three times that of Democrats.

How much does the war in Ukraine threaten U.S. interests?

About one-third of the public (34%) believe that Russia's invasion of Ukraine poses a “great threat” to U.S. interests. The Pew Research Center notes a decline in this indicator.

45% of Democrats now consider a Russian invasion of Ukraine a serious threat - down 5% from March 2022.

26% of Republicans see war as a serious threat to the United States. This share has remained virtually unchanged since the beginning of 2023.

Maintaining strict economic sanctions against Russia

69%, i.e. a large share of Americans approve of sanctions against Russia.

54% approve of continuing to send military equipment to Ukraine;

allowing Ukraine to use U.S. weapons to strike targets on Russian territory  - also 54%;

Overall, majorities of both Republicans (66%) and Democrats (77%) approve of keeping strict economic sanctions in place, the Pew Research Center summarizes.
