A US court has blocked the reorganization of the National Center for Atmospheric Research following a lawsuit by UCAR. The ruling halts the transfer of supercomputing capacities.

A federal court in the U.S. has temporarily blocked the Donald Trump administration's plans to reorganize the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) — one of the world's leading centers for climate and weather research. This was reported by Bloomberg, according to UNN.

Details

Senior U.S. District Judge R. Brooke Jackson issued a preliminary injunction following a lawsuit by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), which manages the center. The lawsuit was filed after the National Science Foundation announced its intention to split NCAR's functions and remove its supercomputing facilities in Wyoming from the consortium's management.

NCAR is one of the key scientific centers in the U.S.

Founded in 1960, the center plays a vital role in climate change research, weather forecasting, and the training of scientific personnel. Its developments are utilized by the U.S. military and government agencies.

Among NCAR's achievements are the creation of climate models that helped predict the consequences of global warming, as well as research into phenomena such as El Niño and hazardous atmospheric processes. The court ruling temporarily halts any steps toward dismantling or transferring parts of the center's functions.
