The US has charged an Iraqi man with plotting terrorist attacks against Jewish sites in Europe and America. The militant was detained in New York and faces life imprisonment.

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed charges against Iraqi citizen Mohammad Baker Saad Dawud al-Saadi for plotting terrorist attacks against American and Jewish targets in the U.S. and Europe. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Details

According to the investigation, al-Saadi is linked to the Kata'ib Hezbollah group, which the U.S. considers close to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). U.S. prosecutors claim he was involved in planning at least 18 attacks in Europe and two in Canada, as well as organizing future attacks on U.S. soil.

Among the potential targets, according to the prosecution, were a synagogue in New York, Jewish centers in Los Angeles and Scottsdale, as well as offices of American banks in Paris and Amsterdam. Investigators state that the suspect transferred thousands of dollars to an undercover agent posing as a representative of a Mexican drug cartel to organize the attacks.

Suspect detained upon arrival in New York

According to prosecutors, al-Saadi was detained on Thursday after arriving in New York. His lawyer stated in court that the man had previously been detained by Turkish security forces in Istanbul and handed over to the U.S. without the possibility of appealing the extradition.

U.S. prosecutors also claim that al-Saadi collaborated with former IRGC commander Qasem Soleimani and Kata'ib Hezbollah leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, both of whom were killed in a U.S. strike in 2020. If found guilty on the most serious charges, he faces life imprisonment.
