As of Monday, the cyclone's center was located approximately 165 kilometers south of Panama City, Florida. The maximum sustained wind speed was 55 km/h, and forecasters expect the system to strengthen to a tropical storm level in the coming hours.
The cyclone is moving northwest at a speed of about 6 km/h and is forecast to pass near or along the northern Gulf Coast over the next several days.
Storm warnings issued for several states
A storm surge warning is in effect from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Alabama-Florida border. A tropical storm watch has also been issued for parts of the Florida coast and southeastern Louisiana.

The US National Weather Service warned that storm conditions could spread from the Florida Panhandle to Louisiana as early as Tuesday. Gusts of up to 60 km/h, dangerous storm surge along the coasts of Alabama, Mississippi, and southeastern Louisiana, and waves up to 1.2 meters high are expected.
According to the National Hurricane Center, the formation of one or two isolated tornadoes is also possible in the Big Bend region of Florida this week.
