A video screen showed the flag of Taiwan instead of the emblem of Chinese Taipei when figure skater Li Yu-Hsiang was introduced before his performance in the short program. This incident occurred against the backdrop of long-standing political tensions, as Taiwan participates in international competitions under the name Chinese Taipei to avoid disputes with China, which claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
After the incident, the TD Garden announcer issued an apology to the public. In a statement, the ISU emphasized that they are fully aware of the sensitivity of the situation and expressed their apologies for any misunderstandings or offenses that may have arisen as a result of this error.
Li Yu-Hsiang finished the short program in 30th place.
