The transitional government of Syria, after the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime, said that Russia should reconsider its presence in the country and its interests related to Assad. This was stated by Secretary of the Syrian transitional government Obeidah Arnaout, Euronews reports, UNN writes.
I think that Russia should reconsider its presence on Syrian territory, as well as its interests, which were linked to the criminal Assad regime. They can reconsider their position and take an initiative with the new administration to show that they have no enmity towards the Syrian people and that the era of the Assad regime is finally over
The spokesman for the transitional government appointed by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebel group also called Russia's recent actions in Syria "ambiguous." Arnaut believes that the Kremlin's decision to remove its naval corvettes from ports and redeploy military equipment does not clearly indicate that Russia is really retreating or that it is part of regular movements.
Addendum
The publication reminds that Moscow is currently using two military bases in Syria: the Tartus naval base on the Mediterranean coast and the Hmeymim air base near the port city of Latakia.
It is emphasized that Tartus is particularly critical because it provides Russia with direct access to the Mediterranean Sea, a base for naval exercises, the possibility of basing warships and deploying nuclear submarines.
According to Arnaout, Syria's transitional government is holding talks at the highest level with many countries around the world. He emphasized that Damascus has entered a new phase focused on healing decades of internal division. The spokesperson added that the new Syrian policy is "a policy of openness, an approach that seeks to build good relations with its neighbors and the world at large.
Recall
The European Union intends to raise the issue of closing Russian bases in Syria during meetings with rebel forces. This was stated by EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas after a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels.
