German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has made an official statement on the recent prisoner exchange between the United States, Germany, Belarus and Russia. “An operation made possible by close cooperation, especially with the United States. Many thanks to the European partners and Slovenia, which also made a significant contribution to make this possible. The fact that all this was done in such a trusting, constructive and accurate manner. I would like to express my gratitude to all those involved in this operation,” the Chancellor said.
Scholz also emphasized the humanistic significance of this exchange: “We are a society for which humanism is important, for which our ideas of freedom are important, for which democracy is important as a value. For all those who have been forced to fear for their lives because of their belief in freedom and democracy, the release and rescue of these people is an integral part of our humanistic concepts as a society. For us Germans, this is a special contribution.
In conclusion, the Chancellor wished all those who arrived good health and a speedy recovery, and expressed hope for the release of all those still in Russian prisons whose health is at risk. Scholz assured that Germany will continue to make efforts to protect democratic values.
