German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed solidarity with Canada, supporting the country in its confrontation with Donald Trump after his tariffs and statements that Canada should become a new US state. This is reported by Bloomberg, reports UNN.
Canada is not a federal state of anyone. Canada is a proud, independent country. Canada has friends all over the world - and especially many here in Germany and in Europe... We are on your side.
It is noted that Donald Trump's trade actions, as well as proposals for Canada to become the 51st US state, have strained relations between the North American neighbors. The head of the White House announced the introduction of a 25% duty on imported cars and auto parts, which Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called a "direct attack."
The Canadian Prime Minister added that this move is a violation of the trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada, known as USMCA, which Trump concluded during his first term in the White House as a replacement for the previous pact.
Expressing broader disagreement with US policy, Scholz criticized the tariffs that the Trump administration plans to impose on Europe, saying that any such move would trigger retaliation and worsen the situation for both sides.
"Therefore, I say to the United States: cooperation remains the goal of Europe. But if the United States leaves us no choice, as in the case of tariffs on steel and aluminum, we, as the European Union, will react as a single entity," Scholz added.
