"It's important for us to talk about big problems and challenges," the German chancellor said after talks with Xi on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Brazil.
"For example, Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine or the dangerous situations we see in other parts of the world," Scholz said.
"No one should be afraid of their neighbors. This is a very important principle of world peace to which we are committed," Scholz added, possibly referring to Ukraine or Taiwan.
China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory.
Summarizing the conversation between Scholz and Xi, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying pointed out in X that "global development has reached a critical crossroads. China and Germany, as the world's second and third largest economies, are major countries with important influence. Bilateral relations should be considered and built from a long-term and strategic perspective.
"China is willing to work with Germany to strengthen a comprehensive strategic partnership and create more cooperation stories that bring mutual success," Hua Chunying said.
