The Security Service and the National Police detained Russian agents who were preparing an assassination attempt on a Hero of Ukraine, the SBU reported on Tuesday, UNN writes.
Counterintelligence of the Security Service and the National Police thwarted a contract killing of a Hero of Ukraine – a major general of our state's Defense Forces. As a result of joint actions in the Zhytomyr region, two Russian agents who were preparing the liquidation of the Ukrainian warrior were detained,
As the investigation revealed, "the suspects conducted reconnaissance near the serviceman's home and 'coordinated' the murder plan with Russian special services." "Next, they were waiting for the location of a cache from a handler in the Russian Federation, from which they were to retrieve firearms to attack the Ukrainian general from an ambush near his residence," the SBU indicated.
SBU and National Police officers reportedly acted preemptively and detained both hitmen during the preparation stage of the assassination attempt.
According to the case files, the Russian order was being carried out by two drug-addicted individuals from Korostyshiv recruited by the enemy. They caught the attention of the Rashists through Telegram channels where they were looking for "easy money for a fix."
After recruitment, the Russian special services reportedly gave the agents "test assignments." "In particular, it has been established that both suspects are involved in at least two murders in the northern region of Ukraine," the report says.
During searches of the suspects, as reported by the SBU, smartphones were seized containing evidence of their contacts with Russian special services and preparations for the attack on the serviceman.
Currently, the detainees have been notified of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 2 of Art. 111 (state treason committed under martial law); paragraphs 6, 12 of Part 2 of Art. 115 (intentional murder committed for profit by prior conspiracy by a group of persons).
The perpetrators are in custody. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
