According to the country's Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, rescuers managed to pull over 6,400 people alive from the rubble. Authorities continue to identify the dead 17 days after the disaster, and search operations are increasingly transitioning into a phase of body recovery.
According to official data, the new figures indicate an increase in the number of victims compared to previous reports, which stated 4,118 dead.
The earthquake affected at least seven states
Two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 occurred within minutes of each other, causing massive destruction of buildings, power and water supply disruptions. The hardest hit were the state of La Guaira and the Greater Caracas area, where thousands of people were forced to leave their homes.
Rodríguez called for the unblocking of Venezuela's frozen assets, including gold held at the Bank of England and funds blocked by sanctions, to direct them toward disaster relief, housing reconstruction, and the restoration of basic services.
