Number of malaria cases increased by 11 million: African children suffer the most

In 2023, the number of malaria cases increased by 11 million compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 263 million, indicating a lack of significant progress in the fight against this deadly disease.

Children in Africa suffer the most from the disease.

This is reported by UNN with reference to Reuters.

Details

In its new report, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the number of deaths amounted to 597 thousand, which is almost the same as in 2022.

Most of the victims are children under the age of 5 in Africa.

No one should die of malaria, but the disease still affects people in the African region, especially children and pregnant women

- said WHO Director-General Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus.

Between 2000 and 2015, the number of malaria cases and deaths declined significantly, but since then progress has stalled, and in some cases even reversed, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The problems are not only population growth, but also unexpected challenges such as climate change, conflict, drug and insecticide resistance, and insufficient funding.

In 2023, only $4 billion was allocated to fight malaria, while the need was $8.3 billion.

Recall

The World Health Organization is investigating an outbreak of a possible new disease in Congo. According to the WHO, “acute pneumonia, influenza, Covid-19, measles, and malaria” could be the cause of the mysterious illness.
