According to the study, 79% of respondents believe the military confrontation will last for an extended period. For comparison, at the end of March, 65% of respondents held this view. Only 18% of Americans expect the war to end in the coming weeks. At the same time, 37% of respondents supported the resumption of US strikes on Iran, which the US explains as a response to attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The poll also showed that 60% of respondents predict an increase in fuel prices over the next year due to the conflict, and half believe the war does not justify its economic costs. The study was conducted among 1,019 American adults, with a margin of error of about four percentage points.
Reuters notes that the escalation of the conflict occurs against the backdrop of statements by US President Donald Trump about reinstating the naval blockade of Iran and imposing a 20% compensation fee on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Against this backdrop, Republican strategists warn that a possible rise in fuel prices could negatively affect the Republican Party's positions ahead of the US midterm congressional elections.
