Cameras captured groups of people descending into the New York City sewer system at night. Authorities found no damage but are warning of deadly danger.

In New York, police are investigating a series of unusual incidents after surveillance cameras captured groups of people descending into sewer tunnels or emerging from them through manholes in Brooklyn and Queens at night. This was reported by the Associated Press, according to UNN.

Details

In one video filmed in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, about seven people climbed out of a manhole right in the middle of an intersection. Some of them were wearing headlamps and carrying tools that looked like shovels. Another recording captured a group of people emerging from a manhole after several hours underground and changing clothes near parked cars.

Aki Jakupovic, an auto repair shop owner whose cameras captured one of these groups, admitted he does not understand the purpose of their actions.

"I can't say what they were doing there, but I'm worried they're up to something bad,"

he noted.

Authorities assure there is no threat

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection reported that after inspections, no damage to the sewer infrastructure was found. At the same time, department spokesperson Rob Voleisza emphasized that being in the sewer is illegal and poses a serious danger.

"Sewers can contain numerous hazards, including harmful and potentially fatal gases, unstable surfaces, the risk of flooding, and confined spaces,"

Voleisza stated.

According to him, citizens should not enter manholes, drains, or other underground utilities.

Police stated that after checking the areas, they see no threat to public safety. There have been no reports of injuries or arrests at this time. Meanwhile, local residents express doubts about the innocence of such excursions.

"They look like they were looking for something important, like money, or to cause some kind of damage. Seven adults don't go down there just for fun,"

said Brooklyn resident Anthony Purdy.
