The Mexican government has announced increased security measures at tourist locations after a shooting near the Teotihuacan pyramids, which killed a foreign tourist and injured others. This is reported by the Associated Press, writes UNN.
Details
The incident occurred on the eve of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico will host along with the United States and Canada.
According to authorities, an armed man opened fire on the territory of the Teotihuacan archaeological complex — one of the country's most popular tourist sites. A Canadian citizen died, and about ten other people were injured.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum admitted that there was a lack of proper control measures at the site.
It is our duty as a government to take appropriate measures so that such a situation does not happen again
Increased security
Security Minister Omar García Harfuch said that the government has already ordered "immediate strengthening of security" at archaeological sites and key tourist attractions.
In particular, it is planned to increase the presence of the National Guard, strengthen inspections, and expand video surveillance systems to detect potential threats.
Teotihuacan, located about an hour from Mexico City, was to become one of the key locations for tourists during the World Cup.
The event raised concerns about security ahead of the tournament. Analysts note that such incidents undermine the authorities' efforts to create an image of the country as a safe destination for tourists.
Authorities emphasize that such attacks are rare for Mexico, despite the general problem of violence related to drug cartels.
