The 75-year-old monarch issued a statement to the England national team after they lost 2-1 to Spain at Euro 2022 in Berlin last night.

It said, "While victory may have eluded you this evening, nevertheless, my wife and I join my entire family in encouraging you and your support team to hold your heads high . . . And let's join me in offering our sincere condolences, even as we congratulate Spain. . ... But please know that your success in reaching the final of the European Championship is in itself a truly great achievement that brings with it the pride of a nation that will continue to roar for the Three Lions today - and in the many triumphs that I have no doubt lie ahead.
