Cryptocurrency mining threatens energy stability for a number of regions of Russia. This was stated by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin at a meeting on economic issues, UNN reports with reference to Astra.
"An uncontrolled increase in electricity consumption for cryptocurrency mining could lead to a power shortage in some regions. This has already been noted in the Irkutsk region, Buryatia, and the Trans-Baikal Territory," Putin said.
According to him, if a decision is not made at the level of a federal law, there may be a shortage of electricity in the country. Mining accounts for 1.5% of energy consumption.

Putin made his statement after a massive power outage in southern Russia, which occurred due to the shutdown of a power unit at the Rostov nuclear power plant yesterday. In total, at least 2.5 million people in Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Stavropol Territory, Rostov Territory, annexed Crimea and the occupied part of Zaporizhzhia were left without electricity yesterday. However, today the power has been restored in most of the south, except for Krasnodar, where blackout schedules have been introduced until July 19 due to the heat.
And in Buryatia, which Putin mentioned in his speech about miners, more than 115,000 people were left without power yesterday because of an accident at the Gusinoozerskaya SDPP.
