The IOC Executive Board has approved the competition program and athlete quotas for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28). The competition program will include 351 disciplines, with 10,500 athletes participating. This was reported by the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, according to UNN.
The program includes 351 disciplines, which is 22 more than in Paris 2024. The total quota is 10,500 athletes. An additional 698 places have been allocated for 5 new sports proposed by the organizers: baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash.
It is reported that for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, parity has been achieved in the number of women's and men's teams in all team sports. In particular, in water polo - 12 teams each for women and men, and in football - more women's teams: 16 vs. 12 for men.
Also, 5,333 women and 5,167 men will participate in the upcoming Olympic Games.
Additional sports included in the competition program allowed for the involvement of another 698 athletes, including 322 women and 376 men.
There were also 6 new mixed events. In total:
- 161 women's events;
- 165 men's events;
- 25 mixed events.
LA28 - new opportunities for women in sports. Boxing: a new women's weight category ensures full gender equality in the sport program. Water polo: 2 women's teams added. The number of mixed disciplines has been expanded - in archery, athletics (4x100 m relay), golf, artistic gymnastics, coastal rowing and table tennis
In addition, 50m backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke distances have been added to swimming - for men and women; rowing - light weight singles (men and women) and a mixed doubles tournament will debut in the coastal rowing format; sport climbing - separate sets of awards will be contested in two disciplines - bouldering and difficulty.
