In Gravelines, France, on the English Channel coast, an influx of jellyfish forced three nuclear power plant reactors to be shut down at once. Another is operating with restrictions. The plant operator, EDF, said that the animals were interfering with operations—the nuclear power plant requires clean water, UNN reports, citing Bild.

This is not the first time jellyfish have caused problems for the nuclear power plant. Last year, they were already entering the filters of the water-pumping systems en masse. The reactors then also had to be disconnected from the grid for several days. EDF did not report exactly how the animals are causing problems this time. According to the operator, there are no consequences for the safety of the power plant, its employees, or the environment.
