David Rush, a former high-ranking official of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, has been charged with misappropriation of government funds after approximately 300 gold bars worth over $40 million were discovered at his home. This was reported by NBC News with reference to court documents, according to UNN.
Details
According to the investigation, Rush, who had access to classified information and held a leadership position, had over recent months submitted requests for significant sums of money, foreign currency, and gold bars, allegedly to cover operational expenses.
During the search, federal agents also seized approximately $2 million in cash and 35 luxury watches, primarily of the Rolex brand.
CIA referred the case to the FBI
In a joint statement, the CIA and FBI reported that the investigation began following an internal agency audit.
"After an internal CIA investigation identified potential violations of the law, CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred the information to the FBI to conduct a law enforcement investigation,"
Investigators believe that Rush intentionally kept a portion of the funds obtained at home for personal use. At the same time, NBC News sources claim that most of the seized assets have already been returned to the state.
Investigation alleges years of deception
In addition to financial crimes, the former intelligence official is accused of misleading his employers regarding his education and professional experience for nearly two decades. The documents state that he falsely claimed to have degrees from prestigious educational institutions, service as a U.S. Navy pilot, and work at scientific institutions.
According to the investigation, none of these claims were confirmed. The Federal Aviation Administration also found no records of Rush holding a pilot's license. The investigation is ongoing.
