The population of the European Union may decrease by 11.7%, or approximately 53 million people, by 2100. This was reported by Eurostat, writes UNN.

Details

The EU population is estimated at 451.8 million people in 2025. It is expected to grow for a few more years, peaking at 453.3 million in 2029, after which it will gradually decrease to 398.8 million by the end of the century.

Aging population

Forecasts indicate a significant aging of the population. The share of children and young people (0-19 years old) will decrease from 20% to 17%, and people of working age (20-64 years old) - from 58% to 50%.

Instead, the share of people aged 65+ will increase. In particular, the group aged 80 and over will increase from 6% to 16%.

Change in demographic structure

According to Eurostat, the EU demographic pyramid shows a society with low birth rates and high life expectancy. By 2100, a further shift towards older age groups and a reduction in the young population is expected.

The forecast is based on assumptions about changes in fertility, mortality, and migration in EU countries.
