EU extends sanctions against Russia until 2027 over human rights violations

The Council of the EU has extended restrictions against 72 individuals and one organization for human rights violations. The measures include asset freezes and travel bans.

The Council of the European Union has extended until May 28, 2027, the sanctions against individuals responsible for serious human rights violations and repression in Russia. This was reported on the website of the European Council, according to UNN.

The EU noted that the restrictive measures apply to individuals involved in the persecution of civil society, the democratic opposition, as well as the undermining of democracy and the rule of law in the Russian Federation. Currently, the sanctions apply to 72 individuals and one organization.

Sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans

Individuals and organizations included in the EU sanctions list are subject to asset freezes. EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with funding.

In addition, sanctioned individuals are subject to a ban on entry and transit through EU territory. The sanctions regime also includes restrictions on the export to Russia of equipment that could be used for internal repression or telecommunications surveillance.

The European Council emphasized that the EU remains "steadfast in its condemnation of human rights violations and repression in Russia" and expressed concern over the further deterioration of the situation, especially against the backdrop of Russia's war against Ukraine.
