Estonia wants to restrict the operation of another border crossing point with russia. The government plans to close the Koiduli checkpoint. This was reported by UNN with reference to ERR.
Details
According to the Estonian Ministry of Finance, there are two reasons for this: first, it makes it easier to implement sanctions, there is less transportation, and there is no need to open the border with russia. They also say that this way it is possible to save money, although it will not save much.
At the same time, this step will result in a decrease in tax revenues for the local municipality.
The municipality is also concerned about how the nightly closure of the Koidula border crossing affects the daily work of russians with Estonian citizenship in companies operating along the border.
Context
Estonian authorities closed the border crossing with russia in Narva for cars on February 1. Now it can only be crossed on foot. The Narva-Ivanhorod border crossing is expected to remain closed to cars until the end of 2025.
