On the night of a massive attack on the capital, while Russia brought death and destruction, 5 children were born at the Kyiv Perinatal Center. Such occurrences may seem like the norm now, but in reality, this is backed by colossal work and strict adherence to safety protocols, UNN reports.
Ukrainian hospitals are adapting: they are equipping shelters, installing alternative power sources, ensuring uninterrupted water supply, and developing action algorithms for emergency situations.
Even before the full-scale invasion, we were offered the chance to install a pellet boiler room, independent of the centralized heating system. It is also cheaper. Today, we are probably the only maternity hospital that can exist completely autonomously. Our own boiler room. Our own well — there is always water, even when there is nothing else. Water reserves. A catering unit that operates without external power supply. Generators at every branch. There are only six such hospitals in Kyiv that can be completely autonomous
A corresponding action protocol for air raid alerts has also been established at the Perinatal Center; for example, a patient who has not yet entered the active phase of labor is immediately moved to the shelter. Delivery areas are also equipped within the shelter. If a woman is on the operating table, the surgery continues in a protected operating block. All actions are practiced; every doctor and staff member knows their role in any given situation.
The entire medical team is ready to act according to approved algorithms for responding to emergencies – without stopping and without panic. In case of a critical situation, evacuation routes have been established, and constant communication is maintained with city services.
This approach allows the Center to continue its work without interruption, even during the most difficult periods.
