Senate leaders are working on a compromise on border security and aid to Ukraine, but they will have to negotiate hard, and a vote is likely to be postponed until after the recess.

U.S. Senate lawmakers worked over the weekend to find a compromise on border security and military support for Ukraine. However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer admitted on Monday that the negotiations would take time. This was reported by UNN with reference to the Voice of America.

Finding a middle ground is extremely difficult, and both sides must recognize that they will have to make concessions. This will take some time

- Schumer said.

However, during the Senate session on Monday, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell suggested that the vote would take place after the holidays.

I am encouraged by the commitment of my colleagues to continue to make steady progress in the negotiations over the next week and beyond

- noted McConnell.

Addendum

The United States has already allocated more than $100 billion to arm and support Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, and US President Joe Biden has asked Congress to approve another $60 billion.

However, Republicans in Congress are increasingly skeptical about the need to continue funding Ukraine's defense.

Currently, Republicans are demanding changes to immigration rules in exchange for unblocking additional aid to Ukraine. [A small group of lawmakers from both parties, together with representatives of the Biden administration, are trying to work out a deal that will have sufficient support from both sides.
