All USAID staff will be laid off by September 30. The US State Department will take over USAID programs, but employees will not be automatically transferred.

The Department of Government Efficiency announced that all employees of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will be laid off by September 30 – the end of the fiscal year. This was reported by Reuters, writes UNN.

Details

It is noted that all positions not required by law are subject to dismissal. In the near future, all USAID personnel will receive emails notifying them of their dismissal. Employees will be allowed to choose their dismissal date – July 1 or September 2.

The message also states that over the next three months, the US State Department will take over those USAID programs that are considered "vital and strategic assistance programs." However, agency employees will not be automatically transferred to work at the State Department – only those employees who pass a "separate and independent hiring process" will be allowed to work on USAID tasks.

Addition

Earlier, Trump called USAID an "incompetent and corrupt" organization and announced a massive reduction of 10,000 agency employees and the immediate suspension of almost all of its aid programs.

The agency spends about $40 billion – roughly 0.6% of total annual US government spending – on humanitarian aid, much of which goes to health programs. The vast majority of USAID money is spent in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Europe, where it is mostly used for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, the media notes.
