Actors are abandoning intimate scene coordinators: the new profession sparks controversy in Hollywood

Intimacy coordinators, whose role is to ensure the safety of actors during the filming of sexual scenes, are becoming increasingly common on Hollywood sets. However, not all actors are happy with this practice.

According to The Washington Post, UNN writes.

Since the emergence of the #MeToo movement in 2017, intimacy coordinators have become one of the most structured and transformative changes in Hollywood. They act as advocates and mediators between actors and production when it comes to nudity and simulated sex scenes, offering choreography or movement coaching on set and playing an integral role in ensuring a safe and consensual environment for the entire cast and crew.

But recent reports of celebrity opposition to the profession, intimacy coordinators say, have created distorted narratives that breed misconceptions about their role and impact on sets.

The most vocal criticism calls intimacy coordinators a violation of the artistic process - an idea reinforced by high-profile remarks by Oscar-winning actors last year. Mikey Madison decided to forgo one of the coordinators during the filming of "Anora," sparking debate in Hollywood.

Kim Basinger disparagingly referred to the profession as "controlled visits."

Michael Douglas compared it to executives "taking control away from directors." And more recently, Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that she and her co-star Timothée Chalamet asked their intimacy coordinator to step aside during a scene for their upcoming film "Marty Suprim" - a notable admission given how her own history of sexual harassment in the industry helped fuel the #MeToo movement that initiated these changes.

I don't know how it is with children who are just starting out, but... if someone says, "Okay, and then he'll put his hand here," it's very confusing to me as an artist.

- Paltrow explained.

Actors have the right to refuse intimacy coordinators during an intimate scene. But such refusals often become the center of media headlines, Rhodies said, overshadowing other work they do in various departments on set and the broad support they receive from other actors and crew members.

Along with every celebrity who has tremendous power, there are dozens or hundreds of actors who are really happy if a third person discusses the scene with them

- she said.

There have also been many stars of the first magnitude who have advocated for intimacy coordinators. Last year, Emma Stone spoke about the "wonderful" and "meaningful" experience she had on set with "Poor Things" intimacy coordinator Elle McAlpine.

Her presence there was like having both a safety net and a choreographer and a support

- she said, adding that even in simulated scenes, actors can underestimate the physical strain on their bodies.

Kate Winslet said she wished the role had appeared earlier in her career. And Michaela Coel dedicated her 2021 BAFTA win for "I May Destroy You" to her intimacy coordinator, Iti O'Brien.

Your guidance was crucial to my show, and I believe it is crucial to every production company that wants to work on the topic of consent

- she said in her thank-you speech.

I think this context is really important when we consider discussions about intimacy coordinators, because my experience working on set is mostly positive. In practice, it doesn't cause as much controversy as it does in conversations

- said Jessica Steinrock, intimacy coordinator and CEO of Intimacy Directors and Coordinators, the world's largest organization for training intimacy professionals.

Despite criticism, the industry is actively developing. In 2023, intimacy coordinators joined the SAG-AFTRA union, which is working to create standards and a registry of certified professionals.

According to Steinrock, like any new profession, this field is still facing growing pains.

Intimacy coordinators are brand new people, and we are only now getting the framework for what regulation and standardization looks like for this role. This means that in the last 10 years, it is entirely possible that actors have had different experiences communicating with intimacy coordinators - both positive and negative.

- she said.

For example, Toni Collette shared her discomfort working with them.

I felt like these people who were invited to make me feel more at ease were actually making me feel even more anxious. They weren't helping, so I asked them to leave

- Collette said in an interview with The Times of London in 2023.

Intimacy coordinators also cited the high-profile legal dispute between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni as an indication of the need for their role.

It's very important who you hire as an intimacy coordinator and make sure they have the training and experience, because the wrong person in that position can make things worse

- said Rhodes.

And I have a feeling that some of those who have had negative experiences with intimacy coordinators have worked with poorly trained or untrained intimacy coordinators
