Bukantis also explained that the current heatwaves are linked to the intrusion of tropical air masses from North Africa. According to him, Lithuania managed to avoid prolonged periods of extreme heat this year thanks to active cyclonic activity over the North Atlantic, which held back the advance of hot air.
The professor separately noted that the El Niño phenomenon is already intensifying and, according to forecasts, may enter a very strong phase in the autumn. He said this could lead to even greater climate chaos – with droughts, abnormal heat and excessive precipitation in various regions of the world.
