The area of Ukraine's territories that could be potentially contaminated by explosive remnants of war decreased by 17 thousand square kilometers in 2024 and now amounts to 139 thousand square kilometers. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, according to UNN.

According to Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk, First Deputy Minister of Defense, First Deputy Head of the National Mine Action Authority, this was the result of joint work by mine action operators and demining units of the Security and Defense Forces.
In 2024, 3,152.52 square kilometers were surveyed, of which more than 2,500 square kilometers were demined.
In addition, as a result of the implementation of the Action Plan for Humanitarian Demining of the De-occupied Territories in 2024, non-technical surveys were conducted in 165 communities in seven regions, which exceeded the planned number by almost three times. This identified 2,291 sites of suspected or actual contaminated areas with a total area of 302.9 square kilometers.

Almost 140 thousand square kilometers of Ukrainian territory need demining, of which 35.5 thousand square kilometers have already been cleared. More than 4,000 deminers are working on demining, and 50 partner countries have allocated more than $1 billion in assistance.
